Course Preview
In every daily module, you will see a consistent rhythm designed to engage your mind, soothe your nervous system, and root your faith in safety. Below, each part of this preview is marked with these pink boxes to show you exactly how the course works.
1. Daily Queer Ancestor Quote & Bio
Every day begins by grounding you in the lineage of queer thinkers, writers, and spiritual elders who paved the path before us. We intentionally center feature voices that remind you that queer resilience is neither new nor solitary.
“No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.”
— Marsha P. Johnson was an LGBTQ activist, performer, and community organizer. Often remembered as the "Saint of Christopher Street," she became a foundational figure in the gay and transgender rights movements through her prominent role in the 1969 Stonewall uprising, co-founding Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) to shelter homeless queer youth, and her tireless advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS.
2. Core Teaching
The heart of every lesson combines a mix of thoughtful, long-form written reflections and videos featuring Candice, Tim, and guest contributors, including licensed mental health professionals, queer theologians, trauma therapists, and community leaders. The written content breaks down high-control religious conditioning, dismantles conversion therapy and anti-gay theology, and restores your intuitive self-trust. (Inside the full 31-day curriculum, we dive even deeper into Scripture, hermeneutics, and theology to dismantle “clobber passages” and construct an expansive, life-giving understanding of God’s love and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people.)

This journey is for every LGBTQ+ person who was made to feel less than holy.
For those who loved God, prayed harder, tried to be faithful, and even tried to change.
Being told the way you were created disqualifies you from a relationship with God is devastating is deeply disorienting. And sexual orientation is not something that can Just be prayed away.
This journey is for those who survived that.
For the parts of you that had to split to stay safe — the faithful part, the queer part, the obedient part, the exhausted part, the hopeful part that never quite let go.
We’re here to help you bring those parts back together. To separate shame from truth. To rebuild trust with your body and spirit. And to reclaim your identity as a beloved, whole child of God.
It’s time to PRAY THE GAY TO STAY
Unlearning the Script of "Change"
Many of us who were raised in evangelical Christianity were taught to believe homosexuality was an unforgivable sin and that embracing it would condemn us to a life separated from God, our families, and our church communities. We were told that if our faith was genuine, we could pray our sexuality away and change our orientation through spiritual grit, a relationship with God, and emotional surrender. More than 700,000 people in the United States have endured so-called conversion therapy efforts. For some, that took place in intensive pastoral counseling, camps, or ministries operating under the umbrella of Exodus International. For many more, it was an agonizing “DIY” approach, spending years closeted in our bedrooms, fasting, rebuking intrusive thoughts, reading ex-gay literature, and attempting to wage war against our own desires using the toxic frameworks we absorbed from the pulpit and the influence of conversion therapy groups.
Decades of peer-reviewed scientific research, along with the unanimous consensus of every major medical and mental health association, have proven what survivors of these harmful practices already know in their bodies and spirits: Conversion therapy does not work, and its aftermath is catastrophic. It divides people from themselves, separates them from people they love, and many leave their faith in God altogether when their earnest efforts to “change” don’t work.
Exodus International, which at one time was the largest conversion therapy organization in the world, shuttered its doors in 2013. Its leadership publicly apologized, admitting that after nearly four decades, 99.9 percent of participants never experienced a change in orientation and that the ministry had produced nothing but deep spiritual and psychological trauma.
Even with Exodus’s closure, though, the toxic ideology of conversion therapy did not disappear. Instead, it evolved.
Modern conversion therapy efforts rarely look like the stark, institutional methods of the past. Today they arrive optimized for social media, wrapped in softer, therapeutic-sounding rhetoric: finding healing from emotional deficits, navigating unwanted same-sex attraction, or choosing obedience over identity. Contemporary initiatives like the CHANGED Movement have rebranded the old shame into modern aesthetic packaging, pitching self-erasure as spiritual discipline, holy sacrifice, and the only path to live in right relationship with God.
The underlying premise remains identical: You are broken, and God’s grace is conditional on your willingness to pray your sexuality away.
When you live inside that ideology, your nervous system is locked in chronic fight-or-flight mode. You learn to audit everything you do, second-guess your intuition, and mistake feelings of dread and shame for the conviction of the Holy Spirit. You spend decades pleading with God to remove the very desires that make you capable of connection, intimacy, and love.
And when the promised change never happens, the system never blames its faulty premise. It blames you.
You are told that your faith isn’t strong enough, that you are harboring hidden sin, or that you simply aren’t in right relationship with God and therefore cannot be holy. What follows is a devastating cycle of spiritual burnout, severe depression, panic attacks, and relational isolation. Many of us reached points of suicidal ideation, believing that dying was preferable to continually failing God.
The profound tragedy of conversion ideology isn't just that it fails to change sexual orientation. It’s how it severs your ability to trust yourself, your body, and the wonder of who God created you to be.
To begin to heal, we have to unmask the deception. We have to contrast what conversion systems conditioned our bodies to believe with what Scripture reveals and what we know to be true in our lived, embodied reality.
1. On "Brokenness" & Root Causes
What We Were Told: "Your sexuality is a broken distortion of God’s design, born out of emotional deficits, distant parents, or childhood trauma."
Another Way To Read It: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." (Psalm 139:14). Divine creation does not produce mistakes that require self-erasure to be loved. Your capacity for love, connection, and desire is an authentic reflection of divine creativity, not a defect.
A Different Way Forward: LGBTQ+ people do experience real wounds, from rejection, isolation, and harmful theology. But what if the wound was never your sexuality? What if the wound was being told that who you are is broken and unworthy? Healing doesn’t have to mean changing yourself. It can mean tending to the wounds created by trying to change
2. On Self-Denial & the “Lifelong War”
What We Were Told: "If you truly loved God, you would deny this desire, pick up your cross, and choose obedience over identity."
Another Way To Read It: There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." (1 John 4:18). ). A spiritual system that coerces compliance through the threat of abandonment, loss of family, or eternal damnation is rooted in fear, not love
A Different Way Forward: What if surrender doesn’t require a lifelong war with yourself? You can begin laying down the exhausting hypervigilance, shame, and self-policing you were taught were signs of faithfulness. Making peace with yourself does not have to mean walking away from God.
3. On Loneliness & The Illusion of "Transformation"
What We Were Told: "If you surrender your sexuality to God, God can change your desires, or give you the grace to live without acting on them.”
Another Way To Read It: “It is not good for the human to be alone.” — Genesis 2:18 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” — 1 Corinthians 13:13
From the beginning, Scripture recognizes our need for relationship, belonging, and connection. And throughout Scripture, love is not treated as a distraction from spiritual faithfulness, but as central to it. For many of us, loneliness was reframed as faithfulness, something we were expected to accept as the cost of following God. But Scripture doesn’t romanticize isolation. We were made to know and be known, to love and be loved. Your longing for companionship, intimacy, and love is not evidence that you haven’t surrendered enough. It is part of being human.
A Different Way Forward: Transformation doesn’t have to mean becoming straight or learning to live without intimacy. It can mean becoming more fully yourself: more connected, more alive, and more able to give and receive love. You don’t have to measure your faithfulness by how much loneliness you can endure.
Reclaiming What Was Always Yours
When you step back from these counter-narratives, a startling truth comes into focus: the church didn’t teach you to fear God. It taught you to fear yourself in the name of God. Undoing that conditioning isn't something you have to figure out all at once. The truth is simple: you were always welcome at God's table.
We designed PRAY THE GAY TO STAY to help you unlearn the shame, step into genuine freedom, and root yourself deeply in your inherent belovedness as a child of God.
You are not broken. You never were. You have always been loved.
Freedom is not the ability to suppress your humanity. Freedom is peace in knowing that God never asked you to pray yourself away and loves you just as you are.
It’s time to pray the gay to stay.
3. Daily Action
How this works in the course: Healing cannot happen only in your head. Each day features an intentional action, drawing from a grounded blend of somatic practices, guided meditations, mindful reflections, boundary-setting rituals, and sensory reconnections. These are designed to help your nervous system release stored hyper-vigilance, take a calming moment to reflect on the day’s lession, and help you safely re-inhabit your body.
Free to Be Who God Created You To Be
For years, Tim spent his summers traveling to conferences that promised “freedom from homosexuality, desperately trying to change what was fundamentally unchangeable. He sat in auditoriums surrounded by passionate worship, desperate prayers, and emotional altar calls, pleading for God to heal his brokenness, take away his core desires, and replace them with something the church would accept. That wasn’t freedom. It was a lifetime sentence of white-knuckling spiritual performance, chronic hypervigilance, and quiet self-erasure. But real freedom never came from an altar call demanding suppression. It arrived only when he stopped trying to fix who he was and discovered that God had already made him whole.
We built PRAY THE GAY TO STAY to create space to look honestly at the messages many of us were given about our sexuality, our faith and what freedom was supposed to look like. We created what we desperately wished had existed when we were trapped, lonely, and trying to navigate our faith and sexuality: a safe, trauma-informed map that doesn't demand that you disappear to be worthy of belonging.
Our deepest prayer is that this course enables you to experience true liberation and genuine freedom from the messages that taught you there was something wring with who you are. We want you to taste the true, sacred freedom to live openly and unapologetically as the person God created you to be, without needing an asterisk or an apology attached to your name.
In the video below, actor Bill Nighy plays the literal, personified figure of anxiety. Everywhere Florence Welch moves, he is right beside her, sitting on the bench, trailing her down hallways, pouring tea, and resting a heavy hand near her shoulder. He represents that quiet, relentless passenger that never seems to leave.
For so many who have survived conversion therapy or high-control religion, that figure is intimately familiar. It looks like the lingering voices of former pastors, the fear of divine punishment, the internalized shame, and the conditioned reflex that is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Those voices might still follow you into the room, but they will no longer have the authority to tell you who you are.
As Florence dances wildly around the figure of her anxiety, the video captures that exact moment of release: You don’t need to wait for every nervous thought to vanish before you claim your joy; instead, you can dance right in front of it.
This song is like an embodied liturgy of defiance. Even when fear and old religious scripts try to shadow your steps, freedom is taking your body back anyway.
Step-by-Step Exercise
Watch the music video below.
Notice Bill Nighy’s presence as the shadow of anxiety, and watch how Florence acknowledges him without letting him stop her movement or dictate her joy.
As the tempo kicks into gear, stand up and let your shoulders drop. Acknowledge whatever lingering voices or anxiety you brought into today.
Shake out your hands, sway, or dance along with Florence. There is nothing to prove or apologize for. Let your nervous system feel what it is like to move freely in the presence of old ghosts.
When the video ends, place one hand over your heart and one on your belly. Take a slow, grounding breath and remind yourself: I am free to be who God created me to be.
4. Daily Breath Prayer
How this works in the course: Breath prayer is an ancient, contemplative Christian practice that pairs short, meaningful phrases with your natural respiratory rhythm. Trauma, fear, and religious hypervigilance immediately trigger shallow breathing and tighten the chest and gut. This is a practical somatic tool you can return to anytime throughout the day, whether you’re sitting at your desk, triggered by a conversation, or trying to settle your mind before sleep. It will signal safety to your nervous system and anchor your spirit in the day’s teaching.
Prayer for Today
Inhale:
I am not broken.
Exhale:
I am free to be who God created me to be.
5. Journal Reflection Prompts & Downloadable Workbook
How this works in the course: All course participants receive a downloadable, beautifully formatted reflection journal to process their journey off the screen. Writing down your thoughts and reflections slows the spiral of anxious thoughts, brings your body into the process of deconstruction, and create tangible proof of your own healing. Don’t worry; this isn’t homework you need to submit. It is a sacred, private record of you finding your way home to yourself.
Journal Prompts
What was the definition of “freedom” handed to you in religious or high-control spaces (e.g., freedom from sin, freedom from your feelings, freedom through changing yourself)? Where did that definition leave you exhausted, guarded, or disconnected from your own body?
Think of a recent moment when you felt entirely comfortable in your own skin, without monitoring your words, posture, or tone. What did genuine freedom feel like physically in your body in that moment?
If you truly believed that God delights in your queerness and that you have full permission to be who God created you to be right now, what heavy expectation or self-policing habit could you finally set down today?
Complete this sentence in your journal: True freedom for me today doesn’t mean changing who I am, it means…
6. Chosen Community & Private Space
How this works in the course: You are never asked to do this in isolation. Enrollment unlocks access to our private, moderated community space in which you can interact with Candice, Tim, and other course participants. And all registrants receive an optional 15-minute therapeutic consultation with licensed clinicians at The Christian Closet.
Are You Ready to Step into Real Freedom?
If this preview resonated with your spirit, know that you don’t have to navigate this journey on your own. The exhaustion you feel from trying to earn God’s acceptance doesn’t end the moment you decide to stop trying to fix what was never broken.
